Nutritionists help you explore the food you consume and how your food choices may be contributing to or detracting from your well-being. A nutritionist must have a thorough understanding of your medical history, allergies, current conditions and other factors as well as your interests or goals. With this knowledge the nutritionist works with you to develop a plan for the kind, quality and quantity of food, drink and (when necessary) supplements to ensure your getting essential nutrients on a daily basis. Some nutritionists will teach you how to shop for and prepare foods. There are strong opinions about the distinction between registered dieticians and nutritionists. A registered dietician (RD) is required to have extensive education, practicum experience and licensure. While many nutritionists have the same preparation and credentials, others have no or bogus education, training and credentials.

The Gale Group (2004) provides the following recommendations: Be clear on what you need. If you are overweight, your needs will differ from someone who has food allergies or is diabetic. Find a nutritionist who specializes in your needs and can help with your specific situation. Since nutritionists are not required to have any distinctions, do your research. Ask them where they went to school and trained; is that school accredited? Ask about their credentials; are they licensed by a credible organization? Meet first to determine if they are a good match for your personality. Is it possible to set up an initial consultation that will allow you to determine if they are sensitive to your needs? Certified holistic nutritionists offer the combined knowledge of cutting edge research with time proven traditional food based wisdom.
