Counselors . . .
Mental health counselors work with individuals, families and groups who are suffering from a wide variety of mental health conditions. Counselors are trained in a variety of therapeutic techniques and can help you with issues ranging from educational decisions, job and career concerns, stress management, family, parenting, marital or other relationship problems, as well as more serious conditions including depression, addiction and substance abuse, suicidal impulses, self-esteem and grief.
Mental health counselors often work closely with other mental health specialists, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, psychiatric nurses and school counselors.
Marriage and family therapists apply family systems theory, principals and techniques to individuals, families, and couples to resolve emotional conflicts. In doing so, they modify people’s perceptions and behaviors, enhance communication and understanding among family members, and help to prevent family and individual crises. Marriage and family therapists also may engage in psychotherapy of a non-medical nature, make appropriate referrals to psychiatric resources, perform research, and teach courses about human development and interpersonal relationships.
If you are looking for a mental health professional, please spend the time to find the right one for you. Minimally, a counselor should possess a post-bachelor's graduate degree (MA or PhD) from an institution accredited by the Council for Acceditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. Additionally, your counselor should be licensed or certified by the National Board for Certified Counselors. Finally, many individuals may have special training, licensing and/or certifications in therapeutic philosophies and/or techniques that are well suited for your personality and needs -- ask about these too. As always, can the individual provide testimonials of others who have received services from them? What can you expect from your treatment plan? Will your health insurance cover the fees? Will your health insurance reimburse you for fees associated with the service?
